During process discovery the as-is processes are identified, documented and analyzed. Process discovery initializes the activities leading to the implementation of BPM. Due to the iterative nature of BPM implementation, process discovery may be repeated several times during BPM lifecycle.

The first step in process discovery is “identification”, whereby each process is listed in the inventory by name and its owner. First interview with the process owner is conducted.

There are numerous candidate processes for implementation. They have to be prioritized for the initial investment of discovery and documentation on the basis of their business case and an ROI.
